How Does an Airbag Work?

As a moderate or severe crash happens, the sensors send a signal to the airbag, which starts a chemical reaction. This chemical reaction consists of releasing of a harmless amount of nitrogen gas, which fills the airbag and pushes it out of its compartment. This whole process happens in 1/20 of a second (half the time it takes to blink your eyes.) As it absorbs the collisions energy, the gas disappears, deflating the airbag.
